Major Duties Under the general supervision of the Director of College Advising for the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media, & Communications, Student Services Center/Education Opportunity Program (MCCAMC: SSC/EOP), the Undergraduate Academic Advisor delivers comprehensive advisement that supports student progress, connects learners to resources, and strengthens the overall success initiatives of the College. Responsibilities span direct student interaction, policy interpretation, workshop participation, departmental collaboration, and engagement in meetings, training, and broader student-support efforts. Offer individualized guidance that supports academic decision-making, goal setting, and timely progress toward degree completion. Help students interpret university processes, resolve concerns, and understand options related to academic standing, requirements, and available support services. Participate in planning and facilitating advisement workshops, information sessions, and orientation-related programming. Collaborate with faculty and campus partners to streamline communication and updates affecting student pathways. Engage in departmental meetings, trainings, and ongoing professional development to remain current on policies, programs, and student-success initiatives. Responsibilities

  • Offer individualized guidance that supports academic decision-making, goal setting, and timely progress toward degree completion.
  • Help students interpret university processes, resolve concerns, and understand options related to academic standing, requirements, and available support services.
  • Participate in planning and facilitating advisement workshops, information sessions, and orientation-related programming.
  • Collaborate with faculty and campus partners to streamline communication and updates affecting student pathways.
  • Engage in departmental meetings, trainings, and ongoing professional development to remain current on policies, programs, and student-success initiatives.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field.
  • Equivalent to one year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry trainee level.
  • A Master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of degree structures, general education patterns, academic policies, and institutional regulations to effectively guide students through program options, graduation pathways, and university expectations.
  • Ability to engage diverse student populations through clear communication, active listening, and supportive dialogue across both one-on-one and group advising settings, ensuring accurate information and a positive student experience.
  • Competence in helping students explore academic interests, plan courses, interpret academic progress, and navigate challenges by offering structured guidance that promotes retention, progression, and timely degree completion.
  • Ability to recognize and address the personal, academic, and socioeconomic factors affecting EOP students, connecting them with resources, encouragement, and tailored support that enhances well-being and academic success.
