Experienced Grant Writer – Tribal / Native Health & Social Services (Contract / Part-time)

Worldwide Salaried Open

About Arcnito & NunaHub Arcnito is a small, early-stage social impact company building NunaHub – a simple community platform that helps Native and tribal communities organize:

  • Community calendars (local events, cultural activities, youth programs)
  • Resource navigation (benefits, housing help, social services, mental health)
  • Light telehealth / tele-services (connecting residents to trusted providers – not an EMR)

We currently work with Alaska Native and Arizona tribal / Native-serving organizations, including tribal governments, health and social service programs, and youth-focused initiatives. We are looking for an experienced grant writer who understands this landscape and can help us design and secure funding in partnership with our tribal and Native-serving partners. This is a contract / 1099, part-time role with a clear, limited Phase 1 scope and budget (approx. USD $2,000–$2,500). If the collaboration is a good fit, there may be ongoing project-based work. Role Summary The Grant Writer will:

  • Help us identify high-fit funding opportunities for Native-serving projects in Alaska and Arizona.
  • Develop well-structured, culturally respectful proposals in collaboration with our small team and tribal partners.
  • Focus first on a Phase 1 project that includes a grant map/calendar and two priority proposals, working within a defined budget.

This role is ideal for someone who has hands-on experience with tribal governments or Native-serving nonprofits, and who is comfortable working with a small, lean team.

Key Responsibilities

Phase 1 (initial 2–3 months, approx. 40–60 hours total):

  • Grant Research & Calendar (approx. 10–15 hours)
  • Review our current work and pilot ideas in Alaska and Arizona.
  • Identify 15–20 high-fit funding opportunities over the next 6–12 months, with emphasis on:
  • Tribal / Native-serving foundations and community foundations
  • Health, behavioral health, youth, suicide prevention, housing support,
  • Telehealth, digital inclusion, and community wellness
  • Build a simple grant tracker / calendar (Google Sheet / Excel) showing:
  • Funder name, website, focus areas, funding range
  • Eligibility (tribe / nonprofit / fiscal sponsor, etc.)
  • Deadlines and your quick fit rating (high / medium / low)
  • Two Priority Proposals (approx. 25–35 hours total)
  • Work with our team and partners to choose two top-priority opportunities from the list.
  • Help refine clear project concepts (goals, activities, timeline, basic budget).
  • For each opportunity, prepare:
  • A detailed proposal outline, and
  • A strong first draft of the narrative (we will support with local context, data, and letters of support).
  • Revisions / Additional Concept Note (approx. 5–10 hours)
  • Revise drafts based on feedback and funder requirements.
  • If time allows, prepare a short concept note or letter of inquiry for a third opportunity.

We will handle internal approvals, signatures, and final submission. Your focus is on the research, structure, and writing. Most work can be done remotely and asynchronously, with occasional Zoom or phone check-ins.

Required Qualifications

Please apply only if you meet most of the following:

  • 3+ years of grant writing experience, including work with at least one of:
  • Tribal governments or councils
  • Tribal health organizations or urban Indian health centers
  • Native-serving nonprofits (social services, youth, education, housing, behavioral health)
  • Demonstrated track record of successful grants (foundation, community foundation, or government).
  • You should be able to describe: funder, general topic, approximate award size, and whether it was funded.
  • Experience writing about:
  • Behavioral health, suicide prevention, youth programs,
  • Community wellness, social services, housing support, and/or digital inclusion / telehealth.
  • Excellent written English: able to write clear, concise, non-buzzwordy proposals.
  • Comfortable working as an independent contractor (1099), managing your own time and clearly tracking hours and deliverables.
  • Able to work respectfully and collaboratively with Native and tribal partners, listening to local priorities and community context.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience working with Alaska Native organizations (tribes, consortia, foundations, housing authorities, or health organizations).
  • Experience with Arizona tribes or Native-serving organizations (e.g., Salt River, Gila River, Navajo, Hopi, urban Indian health programs).
  • Familiarity with:
  • Indian Health Service (IHS),
  • SAMHSA, HRSA, CDC, or similar public health grants,
  • Community broadband, digital equity, or telehealth initiatives.

Compensation & Schedule

  • Job type: Contract / 1099, part-time
  • Location: Remote (U.S.-based preferred; Alaska or Arizona experience is a plus)
  • Hourly rate: Typically USD $35–$45/hour, depending on experience
  • Phase 1 budget: Approximately USD $2,000–$2,500 total, corresponding to about 40–60 hours of work

Working hours are flexible and can be scheduled around your existing commitments. We are more interested in quality, clarity, and fit than in volume. We understand that no one can guarantee grant awards, but we are looking for someone who:

  • Has a realistic understanding of success rates, and
  • Can help us focus on opportunities where we have a meaningful chance given our size and stage.

If Phase 1 goes well and our partnerships grow, future work may include additional proposals or a small ongoing retainer for grant support.

How to Apply

To apply, please submit:

  • Your resume or LinkedIn profile
  • A short cover letter describing your experience with tribal or Native-serving organizations
  • 2–3 examples of grants you have worked on, including:
  • Funder name
  • General topic / program area
  • Approximate award size
  • Whether the grant was funded
  • (Optional) 1–2 writing samples (you may redact sensitive or confidential information)

Please also indicate:

  • Your hourly rate, and
  • A rough breakdown of how you would allocate 40–60 hours across:
  • Grant research + calendar
  • Two priority proposals
  • Revisions / concept note

We appreciate your time and look forward to connecting with candidates who are passionate about supporting Native and tribal communities through thoughtful, well-designed projects and funding.
