Role Description The Remote Organ Administrator on Call (OAOC) will support the mission, vision and values of We are Sharing Hope SC (SHSC) by serving as a clinical leader during their scheduled OAC shifts. The remote OAOC will assume direct responsibility for the clinical decision making on every donor referral made to SHSC during their assigned shift. The remote OAOC will be responsible for the direct oversight of the daily clinical operations related to organ donation within SHSC’s donor service area. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Staff deployment
  • Resource utilization
  • Communication with onsite clinical staff
  • Collaboration with other members of the SHSC team and external partners
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory policies and procedures throughout each step of the donation process
  • Ensuring the successful outcome of every donor case on their assigned shift

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or higher in nursing, respiratory therapy, paramedic medicine, related biological science, or medical school degree required
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in nursing, respiratory therapy, or related biological science preferred
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as OPO clinical coordinator with previous Organ AOC or Referral AOC experience preferred
  • Microsoft Office products (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) required
  • Microsoft Outlook required
  • Electronic medical records (e.g., Cerner, Epic, Meditech) preferred
  • Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator (CPTC) preferred
  • Ability to fulfill on-call obligations; work up to 24 consecutive hours

Requirements

  • Fifteen (15) 12-hour shifts a month will be required for this position
  • The Remote OAOC will make critical decisions regarding staffing, utilization of resources, case management, allocation and providing real-time constructive feedback as well as education to clinical staff
  • In conjunction with SHSC’s Medical Directors, the Remote OAOC will screen potential donors for the suitability of donation after brain death and circulatory death based on the information provided by onsite clinical staff
  • Ensures that all donor evaluations and organ cases are carried out based on SHSC, Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), OPTN, and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines and recommendations
  • Is knowledgeable of SHSC’s policies and procedures, and ensures they are followed on every referral/donation case
  • Knowledgeable in brain death and the AAN guidelines surrounding the pronouncement of brain death to be able to complete real-time review of brain death pronouncement/documentation during active donor cases
  • Will review the documentation on donor cases in real time for the accuracy of the following but not limited to; ABO, accurate brain death documentation, serologies, hemodilution, COVID testing and other OPTN documentation requirements
  • Effectively help guide clinical staff through the implementation of standard organ donor management guidelines as well as help direct donor management in conjunction with SHSC’s medical director
  • Determines allocation plan in collaboration with the SHSC Medical Director
  • Oversees all logistical operations for organ donation cases during their assigned shift
  • Effectively provide the onsite clinical staff with direct support and guidance on how to handle new and difficult situations that they may be facing
  • Work collaboratively with SHSC’s Operations Center and Tissue Recovery teams
  • Work in collaboration with the Family Services Administrator on Call (FSAOC) to determine the optimal time to approach families for organ donation
  • Work with Hospital Services / each hospital’s Donation Program Manager to help maintain good hospital relations as well as work through hospital barriers in real time during cases
  • Assist with coroner communication, advocating for donation, when needed
  • Remotely participate in routine AOC meetings, staff meetings and other meetings that are directly related to the OAOC position
  • Remotely participate in process improvement and data development projects, including but not limited to case reviews and research opportunities
  • Participate in local, regional, and national seminars on organ, eye and eye donation
  • Travel to South Carolina four times a year for in-person OAOC training
  • Remain current on all OPTN policies and CMS regulations
  • May need to assist with organ allocation during times of higher levels of clinical activity
  • Performs other duties as assigned
