Since 1999, the IRC has developed partnerships with New York City public schools, community-based organizations and local colleges and universities to support the positive development of refugee youth and their communities in New York City. The Youth Education Team provides year-round programming working directly with refugee youth, their parents and families, and their schools. Job Overview: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) serves immigrant youth with an array of needs, one of which is learning English. Families who immigrate to the U.S. enroll their children in the American school system, and these students take part in academic classes and school programs, engage in social events, and develop new relationships, all of which require extensive knowledge of the English language. To support this, the International Rescue Committee -New York RAI offices Youth Education department seeks a creative and engaging ESL instructor to teach online and in-person after-school ESOL classes for middle and high school students. Classes will be divided by age and English level. Individual tutoring will be assigned based on student needs. Major Responsibilities:
  • Plan and deliver academically rigorous ESOL classes for young immigrants, newly arrived refugees, and asylee clients enrolled in New York City schools.
  • Document attendance and student progress
  • Attend check-ins with the Youth Education Supervisor and team meetings to discuss individual client and program progress
  • Test student's English language skills using World Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) and/or other assessments
  • Support with student enrollment in the ESOL program.
  • Complete other tasks as needed to support the Youth Education Department
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in education, teaching, or other related subject required; ESL teaching certification (TEFL/TESOL) highly preferred.
  • Experience teaching ESOL to youth from culturally diverse backgrounds using culturally responsive strategies
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as an overall ability to be clear and concise in all communications
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills; proven ability to prioritize
  • Experience with data collection and analysis
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office suite
  • Fluency in English language required. Second language proficiency in relevant language highly desirable (including Arabic, Farsi, Dari, Pashto, Spanish, Ukrainian, Russian and French)
  • Flexibility to work on Saturdays and evenings based on program requirements.
Compensation: Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget.
