Our mission is simple yet ambitious: to bring joy to the world by making entertainment accessible, reliable, and endlessly engaging. To achieve this, we rely on a world‑class data infrastructure that can handle petabyte‑scale workloads, sub‑millisecond latency requirements, and the ever‑growing demand for real‑time analytics. If you thrive on solving complex, large‑scale problems and want to see the impact of your work on millions of users worldwide, arenaflex is the place where your engineering talent can truly shine.

Position Overview

arenaflex is seeking experienced Distributed Systems Engineers (L4) to join our Data Platform team. This is a fully remote, full‑time role based in the United States (candidates must be located in any U.S. state). You will be part of a high‑performing, cross‑functional group that designs, builds, and operates the data foundations that enable arenaflex’s microservices to store, retrieve, and process data at massive scale.

In this role you will:

  • Architect and implement highly available, low‑latency data services that serve billions of requests per day.
  • Collaborate with product managers, TPMs, and other engineering teams to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions.
  • Contribute to open‑source projects and share arenaflex’s innovations with the broader community.
  • Drive performance optimizations, reliability improvements, and cost‑efficiency initiatives across the data stack.
  • Mentor junior engineers and help shape the technical culture of the team.

Key Responsibilities

Data Platform Core Services

  • Design and maintain a flexible query layer that delivers sub‑millisecond latency for a wide variety of data access patterns.
  • Build and evolve distributed storage systems, ensuring durability, consistency, and scalability.
  • Implement and refine data ingestion pipelines that handle petabyte‑scale ETL workloads, leveraging technologies such as Apache Flink, Presto/Trino, Druid, and Iceberg.
  • Develop self‑service tooling that empowers other engineering teams to provision, monitor, and troubleshoot data resources without deep platform knowledge.

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Partner with product owners to understand high‑impact use cases and translate them into platform capabilities.
  • Work closely with security, reliability, and compliance teams to embed best‑in‑class practices into the data platform.
  • Lead design reviews, conduct architecture workshops, and drive consensus across multiple engineering groups.
  • Represent arenaflex at industry conferences, meetups, and open‑source communities, showcasing our engineering achievements.

Performance & Reliability

  • Identify bottlenecks, conduct root‑cause analysis, and implement performance improvements that reduce query latency and increase throughput.
  • Develop automated testing, monitoring, and alerting frameworks to ensure platform health and rapid incident response.
  • Participate in on‑call rotations, providing expertise during critical incidents and driving post‑mortem actions.

Essential Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of hands‑on experience building large‑scale distributed systems or data platform components.
  • Programming Skills: Proficiency in Java and at least one additional language such as Python, Go, or Scala.
  • Systems Knowledge: Deep understanding of distributed systems concepts—consensus algorithms, fault tolerance, data replication, and consistency models.
  • Data Technologies: Experience with modern data processing frameworks (e.g., Flink, Spark), query engines (Presto/Trino, Druid), and columnar storage formats (Parquet, Iceberg).
  • Problem‑Solving: Demonstrated ability to tackle ambiguous, high‑impact business problems with elegant, scalable solutions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or advanced coursework in distributed computing, databases, or related fields.
  • Contributions to open‑source projects, especially within the data infrastructure ecosystem.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and container orchestration (Kubernetes).
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure‑as‑code (Terraform, CloudFormation), and observability tooling (Prometheus, Grafana, Jaeger).
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.

Core Skills & Competencies

  • Architectural Vision: Ability to design end‑to‑end data solutions that balance performance, reliability, and cost.
  • Collaboration: Comfortable working in a matrixed environment, influencing peers across product, engineering, and operations.
  • Continuous Learning: Passion for staying current with emerging data technologies and industry trends.
  • Ownership: Proactive mindset—take responsibility for the full lifecycle of the services you build.
  • Mentorship: Commitment to growing junior talent and fostering a culture of knowledge sharing.

Career Growth & Learning Opportunities

At arenaflex, your career trajectory is limited only by your ambition. As a Distributed Systems Engineer, you will have access to:

  • Mentorship from senior architects who have built some of the world’s most demanding data platforms.
  • Internal training programs covering advanced topics such as real‑time streaming analytics, machine learning pipelines, and distributed consensus.
  • Opportunities to lead cross‑functional initiatives, influencing product direction and platform strategy.
  • Funding for conferences, certifications, and technical workshops to keep your skills sharp.
  • A clear promotion path from L4 to senior and principal engineering roles, with transparent performance criteria.

Work Environment & Culture at arenaflex

arenaflex embraces a remote‑first culture that values flexibility, autonomy, and results. Our engineers enjoy:

  • Flexible work hours—standard 8‑hour days, but with the freedom to adjust as needed to accommodate personal commitments.
  • A collaborative virtual workspace equipped with state‑of‑the‑art communication tools, shared code repositories, and real‑time debugging sessions.
  • Regular virtual “coffee chats,” hack weeks, and community‑driven tech talks that foster camaraderie across geographic boundaries.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion—arenaflex actively recruits talent from underrepresented groups and supports employee resource groups.
  • Health and wellness programs, including mental‑health resources, fitness stipends, and comprehensive medical coverage.

Compensation, Perks & Benefits

While specific salary figures may vary based on experience and location, arenaflex offers a competitive compensation package that includes:

  • Hourly rate of $27 USD (or equivalent annualized salary) with performance‑based bonuses.
  • Full medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and eligible dependents.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company matching contributions.
  • Generous paid time off, parental leave, and holiday schedules.
  • Professional development budget for courses, certifications, and conference attendance.
  • Home office stipend to equip your remote workspace with ergonomic furniture and high‑speed internet.
  • Employee stock purchase plan (ESPP) and equity grants that align your success with the company’s growth.
