Stanford University Libraries is seeking a full-time Metadata Archivist to join the Department of Special Collections & University Archives. About the Position The Metadata Archivist has primary responsibility for describing digital files across Stanford University Archives collections, both born-digital and digitized, and accessioning those files to the Stanford Digital Repository (SDR). The incumbent also plays a key role in supporting broader initiatives of the Department and of Stanford Libraries, and in assisting Stanford University administrative offices and academic units in digital file management. The Metadata Archivist is essential to advancing the Libraries' investment in digital preservation of Stanford University records. The Metadata Archivist will be an integral member of the Stanford University Archives, which partners with university community members to collect, describe, administer, preserve, and make accessible materials of enduring historic value pertaining to the history of Stanford University. These include selective records of Stanford administration; schools, departments, centers, and institutes; faculty; students, student organizations, and alumni; campus activities and events; and Stanford's relationships with Santa Clara County, the State of California, the region, and the world. Reflecting this vast collecting scope, holdings of the division include more than 36,000 linear feet of material and over 50 terabytes of electronic records within over 2,500 collections dating from the mid-19th century to the present. The University Archives is a division of the Department of Special Collections & University Archives, a collaborative and fast-paced working environment that acquires, arranges, describes, preserves, and makes available primary source materials to support the research needs of Stanford students, post-docs, faculty, and administration, as well as the global community of scholars. This position is 100% FTE and will be physically located on the Stanford campus. A hybrid schedule may be possible after the first year. Core Duties* • Create and enhance descriptive metadata for digital collection materials following professional and departmental best practices and in consultation with the Metadata unit.

  • Collaborate with university community partners transferring records to University Archives to accession and describe digital files.
  • Stage and accession born-digital or digitized content into the SDR according to priorities set by the University Archivist.
  • Undertake privacy and rights reviews for digital files in University Archives in collaboration with staff of the Department's Born-Digital Preservation Laboratory (BDPL) and in consultation with the University Privacy Office.
  • Create, integrate, and remediate digital archival objects in ArchivesSpace, and facilitate access to content via published finding aids in ArcLight.
  • Under the direction of the University Archivist, consult with administrative offices and academic units on digital file management and provide recommendations to ensure preservation of records of enduring value and associated metadata during systems and cloud storage transitions.
  • Develop, contribute to, and maintain local documentation on describing and accessioning digital content to the SDR; contribute to broader documentation for metadata creation and digital accessioning for the Department of Special Collections and University Archives and for the Stanford Libraries.
