Controller, Outsourced Accounting

Worldwide Salaried Open

Punch Financial is a rapidly growing outsourced accounting and CFO consulting firm helping some of the most recognized companies in the world. We have worked with brands such as OVO, Honey, Donut Media, Vapi, Cabinet Health, Sanas AI along with hundreds of venture-backed startups, high-growth e-commerce companies, SaaS businesses, AI companies, and founder-led businesses across a wide range of industries. We are hiring a full-time Controller to take ownership of month-end close, financial reporting, client communication, and accounting quality across a portfolio of clients. This is a fast-paced role and a great fit for someone who wants a long-term position as a trusted accounting partner to interesting companies. Each client has a unique set of financial challenges, so you will constantly be solving new problems, improving processes, and helping clients make better decisions with clean financial information. We are looking for someone who has already owned accounting processes at a senior level. The ideal candidate is comfortable managing multiple client closes at once, reviewing the work of junior accountants, communicating directly with founders and CFOs, and making strong accounting judgments without needing constant oversight. This is a fully remote role, but it requires someone who is highly organized, proactive, responsive, and able to manage deadlines independently. There is significant room for growth with our company for long-term focused individuals. Purpose of this Role As Controller, you will serve as the senior accounting owner for a portfolio of clients. You will lead month-end and quarter-end close, review the work of staff accountants, prepare financial reporting packages, resolve complex accounting issues, and help ensure that each client’s books are accurate, timely, and useful. We are looking for a hands-on Controller who is comfortable getting into the details of client closes, including booking revenue entries, maintaining supporting schedules, reviewing reconciliations, and jumping in to help with close work when necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Own month-end and quarter-end close across multiple clients simultaneously.
  • Manage the general ledger, sub-ledgers, journal entries, accruals, prepaids, deferred revenue, COGS, inventory, payroll entries, fixed assets, debt, equity, and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Review the work of junior accountants and bookkeepers, including bank reconciliations, credit card reconciliations, AP, AR, payroll entries, journal entries, revenue schedules, and close support.
  • Prepare monthly financial reporting packages, including income statement, balance sheet, cash flow support, variance analysis, and management commentary.
  • Partner directly with founders, CFOs, and client leadership teams to answer accounting questions, explain financial results, and support better decision-making.
  • Maintain strong client communication and follow up with business partners to ensure open items are resolved in a timely manner.
  • Apply U.S. GAAP across a wide range of client situations, including accrual accounting, deferred revenue, revenue recognition, capitalization, inventory, COGS, payroll, debt, equity, and expense classification.
  • Support revenue recognition for SaaS, AI, usage-based, subscription, professional services, and e-commerce companies.
  • Work with revenue and billing systems such as Stripe, Shopify, and other client-specific platforms.
  • Support startup and fundraising-related accounting, including convertible notes, SAFE notes, equity, debt, investor reporting, diligence requests, and supporting schedules.
  • Identify and implement process improvements that increase close efficiency, accuracy, documentation, and scalability.
  • Help standardize close processes, review procedures, reporting templates, reconciliation schedules, and internal workflows across the firm.
  • Support internal and external audit requests, tax support, diligence requests, and ad hoc client reporting.

Qualifications

  • BS in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of accounting experience with startups, small businesses, outsourced accounting clients, or high-growth companies.
  • 5+ years of hands-on QuickBooks Online experience. This is a hard requirement.
  • Proven experience managing month-end close for multiple clients or companies at the same time.
  • Strong U.S. GAAP foundation, including accrual accounting, deferred revenue, revenue recognition, prepaids, accruals, inventory, COGS, payroll accounting, fixed assets, debt, equity, and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Strong revenue recognition experience, especially with SaaS, AI, usage-based billing, subscription models, services, e-commerce, Stripe, Shopify, and deferred revenue.
  • Experience reviewing the work of junior accountants or bookkeepers.
  • Strong financial analysis, client communication, time management, and deadline ownership.
  • Ability to work efficiently and independently in a fully remote environment.
  • Candidates must pass an accounting test prior to joining our firm.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • CPA or CPA candidate preferred.
  • Experience in outsourced accounting, client accounting services, startup accounting, fractional controller work, or public accounting CAS.
  • Experience with payroll and accounting systems such as Gusto, TriNet, ADP, Justworks, Bill.com, Stripe, Shopify, Ramp, Brex, Front, Slack, and Google Sheets.
  • Experience preparing investor-ready financial packages, audit schedules, diligence support, board reporting, or fundraising support.
  • Experience improving close processes, accounting workflows, reporting templates, or scalable systems for growing teams.

Who Will Succeed in This Role You will succeed in this role if you are the type of accountant who takes full ownership of the close, not just individual tasks. You should be comfortable managing several clients at once, knowing which issues matter, keeping deadlines moving, reviewing work carefully, and communicating clearly when something needs to be resolved. The strongest candidates will be proactive, detail-oriented, technically strong, and client-service minded. You should be able to look at a balance sheet and know when something does not look right. You should be able to review a reconciliation and know whether it is truly supported. You should be able to communicate with a founder or CFO in plain English and explain what is happening in the numbers. This role is best for someone who enjoys solving new accounting problems, working with interesting companies, and helping build a better accounting function across a growing firm.
