About the role

As a Sr. Underwriting Consultant for Stop Loss, you will evaluate risk on new and/or existing accounts and develops appropriate pricing. You will be accountable for the achievement of profit, persistency, and growth goals through financial analysis of employer groups and medical review of individual members. • *What you will do** - Determine level of risk based on established guidelines and appropriate deviation of guidelines when appropriate. - Analyze information on past case level aggregate claim and shock loss history, medical information review and consultations with Nurses and/or Doctors as well as other standard criteria. - Determine needed rate level using multiple tools: manuals, experience rating, plan change tables etc. Develop and determine appropriate aggregate factors. Underwrite larger and more complex cases. - Effectively Negotiate/Communicate case pricing with Field Sales, Brokers, or other producers to arrive at balanced decisions that are expected to achieve company goals aimed at preserving competitive market placement. - Serve as a role model for other underwriters, an underwriting expert, and a 'go to" person for underwriting issues. - Designee to handle high-visibility and/or otherwise special cases. - Confer with other Underwriting Consultants, Director of Underwriting, AVP and or VP of Underwriting on complex cases and situations not established by practice. Manage assigned block of business. - Accountable for meeting departmental goals on profit, new business sales close ratio, relationship to manual pricing (billed to manual ratio), renewal premium persistency, target renewal rate increase, and time service standards. - Provide competitive feedback on rates/factors and products to management. Recommend improvements in underwriting and marketing strategies. - Take the lead on and facilitate underwriting projects and cross training initiatives. - Daily interaction with field staff; Sales Reps and other underwriters to maintain consistency and support department workflow. - Complete underwriting segment response of Marketing RFPs. - ESL quoting system point person for AVP underwriting region. - Assist with month end outstanding renewal finalizations. - Actively seek out/identify resources and projects to improve underwriting staff and improve understanding of business line within the company and industry. Represent Symetra at external events and functions as appropriate. - Travels with Field Reps. - Second Sign-off Authority for deviation from underwriting guidelines. - Quote Authority Level may increase to Director level when Director is Traveling or away from office. - Act as a mentor to other underwriters through, training & consulting. - Build and maintain excellent client, Broker, Third Party Administrator, Sales Rep, and internal personnel relations. • *Who You Are** - High school diploma or equivalent required. 4-year college degree highly preferred. - 8+ years Excess Loss Risk Based Underwriting preferred. - Extensive Knowledge of Excess Loss products and pricing. - In depth knowledge of the underwriting field and strong understanding of employee benefit plans. -

Captive underwriting experience highly preferred.

- HIA, MHP, or CEBS designations a plus. - Proven analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills. - Validated ability to exercise good judgment in making sound decisions. - Strong attention to detail. - Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills. - Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills. - Service and sales oriented. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey information in a clear and concise manner. - Strong teamwork orientation. - Mastery of underwriting principals, practices, departmental procedures, and Product Offerings. - Excellent Presentation skills. - Solid understanding of Microsoft Office Products. - David Young/ESL experience a plus. -

Some minimal travel required.
