Job Description Project Conservator, Objects (Regular, Part-Time) Conservation Center Reporting to the Senior Conservator, Objects, the Project Conservator, Objects is responsible for the conservation, preservation, and management of the museum's collection of three-dimensional art and historical artifacts. This role involves working on specific conservation projects related to objects, ensuring their physical integrity and historical value are maintained. The Project Conservator will collaborate with the conservation team, curatorial staff, and other museum departments to support exhibitions, collections management, and public programs. The Project Conservator is brought in as needed, to take on available conservation projects. Responsibilities: Perform condition assessments, preventive conservation, and treatment of objects within the museum’s collection. This includes cleaning, repairing, stabilizing, and documenting objects to ensure their longevity. Oversee and manage specific conservation projects from inception to completion, including creating and adhering to project timelines, budgets, and documentation standards. Maintain detailed and accurate records of conservation treatments, condition reports, and any relevant research or findings. Ensure all documentation meets professional standards and museum protocols. Work closely with curators, registrars, and other museum staff to support exhibition preparation, loan agreements, and collection care initiatives. Provide conservation input for exhibition design and installation. Research materials and techniques used in objects within the collection. Stay updated on advancements in conservation science and methodologies. Contribute to educational programs and workshops related to conservation practices. Provide guidance and training to junior conservators, interns, and volunteers as needed. Assist in the preparation of conservation-related publications, reports, and presentations. Represent the museum in professional meetings and conferences.

Benefits

The expected hourly rate for this Los Angeles, CA-based position is $65.00 subject to change. Qualifications: Master’s degree in Conservation, Art History, Museum Studies, or a related field, with a focus on objects conservation preferred. Minimum of 2 years of experience in object conservation preferred, including hands-on treatment and project management. Experience in a museum or similar cultural institution is highly desirable. Proficiency in conservation techniques for various materials (e.g., wood, metal, ceramics, textiles). Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently and as part of a team. Familiarity with conservation tools, materials, and methods. Experience with conservation documentation and standards. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to convey technical information to non-specialists and collaborate effectively with diverse teams. Ability to handle and lift objects safely, and to work in varied environmental conditions (e.g., temperature and humidity-controlled environments). Apply Job!
