We are seeking a highly motivated and accomplished Assistant or Associate Professor in Native North American Literary and Cultural Studies to join our English Department at the University of Connecticut. As a tenure-system position, this role offers a unique opportunity to pursue research excellence, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and contribute to the growth of our vibrant academic community.

About the Position

The successful candidate will have a strong research focus on Native North American Literary and/or Cultural Studies, with preferred areas of expertise including settler colonialism, land and water-based studies, Indigenous feminisms, and Black and Indigenous literatures and politics. We are particularly interested in candidates with a research focus on the literatures and communities of Indigenous peoples of the Northeast or Eastern seaboard and those who engage in community-based research.

Responsibilities

  • Pursue research excellence in Native North American Literary and Cultural Studies
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in English, with opportunities to create new courses
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to pedagogy and student success
  • Engage in service to the department, university, and profession
  • Contribute to the growth and development of our Native American and Indigenous Studies program

Qualifications

To be considered for this position, you must have:

  • A Ph.D. (or international equivalent) in English, Comparative Literature, American Indian Studies, American Studies, Ethnic Studies, or a related field
  • A strong record of, or demonstrated potential for, research excellence in Native North American Literary and Cultural Studies
  • Demonstrated ability to teach at the college or university level
  • Evidence of a deep commitment to supporting diversity, inclusion, and equity in a higher education setting

Preferred Qualifications

We prefer candidates with:

  • A record of, or demonstrated potential for, expertise in Native American literature and culture of the Northeast or Eastern Seaboard
  • Experience teaching in Native American and Indigenous Literary and Cultural Studies
  • Evidence of engagement with Native American and Indigenous pedagogies
  • An interest in engaging with local and/or national community organizations and Indigenous Nations in relevant areas of expertise
